53.03% report no income. The full figures for the employed are:
Income	Distribution
R 1 - R 400	9.10%
R 401 - R 800	13.81%
R 801 - R 1 600	29.93%
R 1 601 - R 3 200	16.49%
R 3201 - R 6 400	12.97%
R 6 401 - R 12 800	9.95%
R 12 801 - R 25 600	4.65%
R 25 601 - R 51 200	2.02%
R 51 201 - R 102 400	0.61%
R 102 401 - R 204 800	0.30%
R 204 801 or more	0.17%
(I dunno how clearly this will come out, but you should be able to get the idea.)

I've actually found the Community Survey 2007 data at http://www.statssa.gov.za/community_new/content.asp?link=interactivedata.asp which hopefully has more recent numbers.

53% of the population aged 16--65 have no income. I removed them from the calculation so that we can consider only the employed population.

Of those with an income, 53% still earn less than R1600; 29% earn between R1600 and R6400; 15% earn between R6400 and R25 600; 2% earn between R25 600 and R51 200; and still the remaining 1% earn more than R51 200.

Actually, those numbers are suspiciously close to the numbers from the 2001 Census in my other post. Maybe the Census numbers are inflation-adjusted.

Adrian, thanks for that.

The issue with those stats is the huge gap between 6400 and 25600. But essentially my numbers were about right.

Basically only 2% earn more than 25600, which is essentially the base point for anyone wanting to buy a 500k property.

And that's the economically active population... what % of south african are unemployed. :/

I pulled some income figures from the Stats SA Census 2001 interactive site at http://www.statssa.gov.za/census01/html/C2001Interactive.asp and munged them in OOo Calc:

55% of the (economically active and aged 15--65) population earns less than R1600 a month. Another 33% earn between R1600 and R6400; and 10% earn between R6400 and R25 600. About 1% earn between R25 600 and R51 200, and the last 1% earn more than R51 200.

Of course, these are 2001 Rands, so some adjustment might be needed for inflation and changes in the economy.
